  • Objective To study the chemical constituents of the South China Sea gorgonian Muriceopsis flavida. Methods The compounds were isolated and purified by repeated column chromatographies including normal-phase silica gel, Sephadex LH-20 and semi-preparative RP-HPLC. The structures were elucidated by the physicochemical evidences and spectra data. The in vitro bio-activities of the compounds were assessed by an agar diffusion test. Results Two sesquiterpenes were isolated and indentified as menverins C (1) and D (2). The two compounds showed different levels of antimicrobial activity in bioassay in vitro. In particular, compounds 1 and 2 displayed considerable growth inhibition toward bacterium Bacillus migaterium and the alga Chlorella fusca, respectively. Conclusions This was the first report of menverins C (1) and D (2) from the genus Muriceopsis. The antimicrobial activity of both compounds suggested a possible ecological role of these metabolites in the chemical defensive strategy of the gorgonian.
